Malcolm Foletti is a foundational figure in AFL Ontario, renowned for his contributions both on and off the field. He played in the first official game on September 9, 1989, and is celebrated for kicking the first goal in CAFA history, marking a significant milestone for the league. His early involvement laid the groundwork for the development and growth of Australian Football in Ontario.
Malcom’s playing career includes the Toronto Panthers in 1989 and the Mississauga Mustangs from 1989 to 1991. He played a total of 30 games, scoring 13 goals, and was part of the premiership-winning Toronto Panthers team in 1989. His prowess on the field was evident as he became the leading goal kicker in 1989.
Beyond his playing career, Foletti made substantial contributions as an umpire, officiating 177 games from 1992 to 1997, including three CAFA Grand Finals and the All-Star Game in 1993. His leadership extended to executive roles within CAFA, serving as Secretary in 1990, Treasurer in 1991, and President in 1992. He was also President of the Mississauga Mustangs from 1990 to 1991.
Malcolm’s dedication to the sport was further demonstrated by his initiative to install the first permanent metal goalposts at Centennial Park in 1991.
